Wed, 4 November 2009 On tonight's show, we discuss computer security: what do you need to know and what threats are real VS hype? And with new security related terms popping up all the time, what does it all mean? Of course most importantly, we'll discuss what can be done about it all, what solutions exist and just how accessible are they?
Computer security is an issue that effects us all whether we're heavy Internet users, or just whether we just send the occasional Email. Fortunately, solutions exist for us to protect our computers, solutions that require merely a basic understanding of the types of threats out there.

Wed, 15 July 2009 With its built in universal access features, Apple's recently released iPhone 3GS is causing quite a stir throughout the blindness community. This week, on the Assistive Technology show, we not only look at the iPhone and its universal access features, but will do our best to answer any questions you may have about the device. Perhaps you're curious how effective a blind person can be using a strictly touch screen interface, or maybe you're wondering about how one accomplishes a specific task? for these answers and much much more, come join me, this Wednesday for the Assistive Technology show.

Wed, 28 January 2009 One question I'm frequently asked is how, as a blind person, can I use a computer? Often, this question leads to some interesting follow-up questions such as: do you use a braille keyboard? Do you talk to your computer? How does it know what to say? And of course, how did you learn to do all that?
Tonight, on the Assistive Technology show, I thought it might be a good idea to address these questions. But of course it's not about how "I" use a computer, but how do others access their computers? My hope is that although this information may not really be breaking news to most folks currently participating in the show, tonight's program might serve as a resource for others who are just plain curious.

Wed, 21 January 2009 On last week's Assistive Technology show, we introduced you to the world of social media discussing such sites as Twitter and Facebook. We discussed what social networking sites do, why one might want to use them and how to get started. Tonight, on the Assistive Technology show, we continue that discussion with demonstrations of ways you might use to better harness the power of social media. We'll demonstrate easier ways to interact with social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, and will show you how to do it in a way that is both productive and fun. Tonight also marks a slight change in format for the Assistive Technology show, a change I'm hoping will make the program an even more valuable resource.

Wed, 14 January 2009 When I first heard about social networking and sites like Myspace, Facebook and Twitter, I decided, right there and then, that this was something for the teenagers of today and definitely not something for me. After all, I'm not necessarily chomping at the bit to "hook up" with high school classmates , didn't see the point in telling the world "what I'm doing" and writing on peoples' "walls" was just something my mama told me a long time ago I should never do. Be that as it may, I kept hearing more and more about this social networking thing and so, on a dark and stormy night, it came to pass that I took my first step into the world of social networking. What really surprised me is how many people are taking that same first step, not just curious folks like myself, but music groups and even businesses. Yes, many businesses are now using social networking as a way to both advertise their wares in addition to communicating with customers.
Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, we'll take a look at social networking -- what social networking is and what it's not. We'll also discuss and share experiences about a few social networking sites.
Before you disregard this Email and determine that tonight's show just ain't for you, I'd like to say that my journey into the world of social networking has gone much better than expected. I readily admit my initial impressions were wrong and am very happy I gave it a chance. Even if you remain unconvinced, I'd urge you to join tonight's program, if only to learn more of what it's all about.

Wed, 31 December 2008 I'd like to start out by wishing everyone a happy new year! I know that for many tonight will be a night to party, eat good food and hang out with friends. But for the rest of us, those with no friends, or those too lazy to go out anywhere, I bring you another edition of the Assistive Technology show. We won't be having any specific topic for this evening's program, but I thought, it being the end of the year and all, we might just look back at some of the really cool tech products and services that have made 2008 a better year.Comments[0] |
Wed, 24 December 2008 Although I will not be able to bring you the Assistive Technology show for this evening, I thought this Christmas concert from 2006 might be a fun repodcast. I remember how much fun it was to present this concert back in 2006 and am hoping some of the new listeners will enjoy it as much as I did back then. So sit back, enjoy the concert and have a merry Christmas.

Wed, 26 November 2008 On the eve of Thanks Giving, I thought it appropriate to dedicate tonight's program to giving thanks to the developers, distributors and instructors of assistive technology without whom, we might not be where we are today. For some, maybe it's a particular assistive technology product that's made the difference while for others, maybe the belief of an instructor, VR counselor, family member, or other person has made all the difference in the world. Tonight, on the Assistive Technology show, we'll have the chance to give thanks to those who have made it all possible.

Tonight, on the Assistive Technology show, we introduce you to the world of blogs. Blogs, or web logs are an ever increasing way to receive information. In their simplest form, blogs are a journal, a journal in which news might be printed, or on-going development efforts to a product, or service documented. The art of Blogging, or publishing ones own blog is not restricted to the ultra geeky, however, leading to millions of blogs written by folks just like you and I. You can blog about anything whether it's your own life, your attempts at gardening, a trip you're taking -- anything you can imagine. And even for those things you can't imagine, like rowing solo across the pacific, or hiking the world's highest mountains, someone has blogged about it.
On tonight's show, we'll talk more about blogs, what they are, how they're created and where one can find them. we'll also look at different ways to read and manage blogs in addition to answering any questions you may have. So, whether you're interested in blogging, already blogging and want to share what you've done, interested in finding blogs to read, or just want to learn something new, come join me for this week's edition of the Assistive Technology Show. When? The Assistive Technology show takes place Wednesday evening's between 7:00-9:00 PM, EDT (2300-0100, UTC). Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, we introduce you to the ever growing world of podcasts. For those unaware, podcasts are audio programs that can be listened to on demand. Basically, you subscribe to programs of interest and with the help of some additional software, the programs are downloaded to your computer. You then have the ability to listen at your convenience, either on your computer, or on a portable audio device such as an MP3 player. Tonight, we'll explore just what a podcast is, how you can go about finding podcasts of interest and what you'll need to do in order to listen. There are literally thousands and thousands of podcasts out there on just about every topic, so no matter what your area of interest, there's a podcast for you.

This week, on the Assistive Technology show, we look at different ways to listen to audio on the go. In the past, we've discussed using portable MP3 players, the Victor Stream and the new accessible iPod, but what's it like to actually use one of these devices? MP3, OGG, AAC, what's it all mean? How complicated is it to digitize audio, to put it on a portable device and finally to actually listen to it? On this week's show, we'll attempt to answer these questions and much much more. Whether you use a portable device for listening to audio and have experiences to share, or if you're interested in exploring the possibilities of taking audio on the go, this week's show is for you. In addition to your experiences and questions, I'll also be demonstrating the talking menus available in Apple's newest 4TH generation iPod Nano.

Wed, 20 August 2008 Tonight, I am proud to bring you the Assistive Technology Show in its new home. Due to technical issues experienced with the TC5 conferencing software, I've decided to switch the show over to Ventrilo. Ventrilo is another high quality audio conferencing solution which some of you may remember we discussed a few months back on the show. In addition to bringing you the Assistive Technology Show, Ventrilo might be a good option for those interested in an accessible online conferencing solution for small groups such as a local computer users group, visually impaired support group, or other community. Although there is no specific topic for this evening's edition of the Assistive Technology Show, I thought it best to take the opportunity to make sure people are abel to use the Ventrilo conferencing software comfortably. I'll answer any Ventrilo questions you may have and will assist with any technical issues you may be experiencing with the software. Of course any assistive tech, or general technology questions are fair game, so whether you've got a question, or just want to learn something new, come join me.

Wed, 7 May 2008 Although there was no specific topic for tonight's program, a number of topics were covered including a discussion of the Guide and other menu driven Internet access systems. Is it better to have technology that's easy to use, or technology that's expandable -- why can't we have both? Choice is good, but how much choice do we really have in terms of our assistive technology?
On tonight's program, we covered these topics and much more.
|
Wed, 23 April 2008 in this demonstration, I explain what Ventrilo is, how you might use it and walk you through installing the program and connecting to a server. I then discuss some of Ventrilo's many options.Comments[0] |
Wed, 9 April 2008 As I continue to search for an audio conferencing solution that can be used to bring you the Assistive Technology Show, Jerry, one of our regular participants, has kindly offered to let us use his online conference room. This gave me an idea, why not take the next few shows and evaluate/compare various conferencing solutions? Although I use online conferencing solutions to bring you the Assistive Technology Show and for teaching, you might use such solutions to conduct a group meeting, a virtual family gathering, to form an online club, or any one of a number of uses. As with everything in technology, there are many options and many solutions, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages.
Tonight, we'll examine the Talking Communities TC 5 conferencing solution, courtesy of Jerry. We'll discuss the various features of TC5 and can compare it to the Ivocalize solution which was formerly used to bring you the show.

Sun, 23 March 2008 In this brief podcast, I provide an update concerning the Assistive Technology Show and the problems being experienced with the Ivocalize chat client.Comments[0] |
Wed, 5 March 2008 We use our computers to store music files, family photos, important documents and other things that simply can't be recovered. Sure, many of us use external drives, USB memory sticks and even secondary computers to back up this data, but how good are these backups in the case of a catastrophic emergency such as fire? Online storage solutions exist, but often are very pricey and of course there's the question of how to actually restore the data when needed. Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, we'll look at a service from Amazon that allows you to store an unlimited amount of data securely online. Not only is this useful for backing up those important files, but the service can work as a virtual hard drive giving you access to files from wherever you happen to be. Potentially, this means you could have access to your music library while at work, view your photos while visiting a relative, or just have space to store those files that simply won't fit on your existing hard drives. So, unlimited space? Surely there's a catch. Well, almost nothing good in life is free, but in the case of Amazon's service, you pay only for what you use -- no monthly fees, no minimums, no setup costs -- just pay $.15 per GB -- that's right, only fifteen cents per gig per month. in fact, my bill from Amazon for my last month's usage was a whapping 45 cents and I'm storing hundreds of files.
Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, I'll demonstrate Amazon's new service and will talk about how to easily get it set up and running. We'll also talk about other potential uses of the service -- people are using this in ways I definitely haven't thought of and probably never would.
Online storage not your thing? As always, we leave ample time during the program for your questions and any other assistive technology, or technology related questions. So come join me, tonight, between 7:00-9:00 PM, EST for this week's edition of the Assistive Technology Show!

In addition to tonight's announced topic, we also discussed the Prodigy glocometer, other accessible glucometers, issues with the Paypal service and much more.

How do you prefer books to be read -- synthesized voice, or narration?
Discussion of the new A T Maine site layout
Click and ship and other online shipping options
Airport and security risks -- what would you do if your high priced note taker were confiscated by the airline security folks?
What do you use as your note taker? Anything recently changed in the PacMate?
Does anyone use alternative braille writers, or is the good 'ol Perkins the best option?
These topics and more were covered in tonight's episode.

Wed, 11 April 2007 So, what the heck is a blog anyway? Well, they're informative, interesting, often entertaining, pretty darned addictive and very accessible. Basically, a blog is like a web-based journal, or diary. Anyone can write a blog about their life, happenings in their family, their trek across Africa, or anything else that they feel might be of interest to others. In addition to individuals, companies are using blogs to inform consumers about the development of new products and services. Tonight, we'll talk about blogs, how to find them, how to read them and ways to organize multiple blogs for easier and more efficient reading. So, if you're a blog reader with a blog you think might be of interest, are curious about blogging, are currently a blog reader and want to learn how to more efficiently access multiple blogs, or just want to learn something new, come join me, between 7:00-9:00 PM, tonight for this week's edition of the Assistive Technology Show! Oh, one more thing, it wouldn't be fun to do a show on blogging without myself having a blog to share, so I've decided to start a new assistive technology blog. In my new blog, I'll be talking about the accessibility of hardware, software and of course web sites. I'm hoping that it will be an informative resource and the basis for discussions to come. Wed, 4 April 2007 Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, we'll go on an Easter egg hunt -- a digital Easter egg hunt! So, what the heck is a idgital Easter egg? Often, programmers add undocumented and hidden features to their programs that can be activated by entering a special code, or by doing something specific. These hidden features often add functionality to a program, are a program within a program, or do something that's just plain cool. And of course, these hidden aspects of a program are called Easter eggs. Tonight, I'll demonstrate some Easter eggs found in common programs and show you how to access them. So, bring any Easter eggs you may know about, or questions you may have and come join me, between 7:00-9:00 PM, EST for tonight's edition of the Assistive Technology Show! Comments[0] |

Wed, 28 February 2007 Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, we'll discuss a topic that many folks ask me about -- routers, dsl/cable modems, IP addresses and what the heck does it all mean anyway? As one of my clients so eloquently put it, "I have all this crap on my desk and have no clue what the hell any of it does." I as non technical a way as possible, I'll explain the relationship between these devices, so you can better understand that tangle of wires that may have sprouted up since you got broadband. In addition, I'm here to answer any other At-related, or technology-related questions you may have, so come join me, between 7:00-9:00 PM for this week's edition of the Assistive Technology Show! Wed, 31 January 2007 Tonight, on the Assistive Technology Show, we'll be talking about digital audio and various programs you can use to create it. Do you have a CD collection you'd like to convert to digital audio thereby giving you fast access to your music from your PC? Are you confused with the many existing audio formats out there, MP3, egg, aac, aacplus, mp4, etc...? What about playing all that music after you've spent the time digitizing it? As always, we'll also be taking your questions about assistive technology, or technology in general, so come join me, between 7:00-9:00 PM, EST tonight for this week's edition of the Assistive Technology Show! Wed, 24 January 2007 Come join me, between 7:00-9:00 PM, EST for this evening's edition of the Assistive Technology Show! I don't know about you, but I often get Emails withannoying greater than signs proceeding each line and as a screen reader user, I find it incredibly frustrating. Sadly, many good jokes and probably other emails have found their way to my deleted items folder simply because I didn't want to hear the greater than greater than greater than message proceeding each line of text. OK, I know that speech settings can be altered to stop the reading of all that ridiculous punctuation, but don't you feel guilty forwarding the Email on knowing that the recipient will have to deal with it? Tonight, I'll be discussing a freeware program I've found that helps eliminate all those pesky greater than signs making Emails much more readable. Of course your questions about adaptive technology, or technology in general are always welcome, so come join me, between 7:00-9:00 PM, EST tonight for this week's edition of the Assistive Technology Show! On tonight's show, we discuss computer security: what do you need to know and what threats are real VS hype? And with new security related terms popping up all the time, what does it all mean? Of course most importantly, we'll discuss what can be done about it all, what solutions exist and just how accessible are they?
Computer security is an issue that effects us all whether we're heavy Internet users, or just whether we just send the occasional Email. Fortunately, solutions exist for us to protect our computers, solutions that require merely a basic understanding of the types of threats out there.
